Pest Control Philippines- Why we are afraid of insects.

Sometimes, reality is stranger than fiction. Insects have been portrayed in horror movies and sci-fi as menace that can wreak havoc. And it is strange, as we all know that most of these tiny insects can’t hurt us, yet when they touch or land on our skin, we scream to death.

Pest Control Industry has been in the service for decades, with a continuous growing demand from clients willing to spend time and money just to get rid of them.  Many people admitted to be afraid of insects particularly spiders, more than who feared dying because of a violent crime or sickness.

Some logical explanations why these generally small and harmless creatures are considered to be so frightening.

1.     1. Because some of them are actually may pose harm or danger.
Yes, they are scary because some of them either bite or sting such as scorpions, bees, bedbugs etc.  The most notable reason is that they can cause harmful or deadly disease such as Zika virus and Malaria brought by mosquitoes.  Researchers believes that we have evolved to be aware of the presence of animals that may pose danger, however how small they seem to be.

2.    2. Because we find them horrible.
Even though we are not afraid of insects the way we fear sharks, snakes or a crocodile.  We may go into panic if we see these deadly animals in the wilderness, but at the same time we can find these animals as popular mascots, animated characters and find them cute and lovely, but we don’t have any bugs/insects gracing the covers of our food labels and boxes or appearing as beautiful in children’s cartoons or fairy tale books.  Some expert suggest that it is the feeling of disgust- (the “rejection response” — the overwhelming feeling that you need to get this thing away from you, like, right now) that causes the real fear from these little critters.

3. They look obnoxious and invasive.

Yes, given their weird physical attributes like many legs and many eyes, and unique locomotion compared to other animals of mammalian order or other stranger animals; it is not surprising that they can evoke fear to us.  Most of the time, we find them as invaders of our homes, and it may be a coincidence or plain reason that we have pictured the green Extra Terrestrials from other planets into their likeness. Most of the time, our encounter with insects feel like an invasion — like an encroachment on our home territory, a place where we’re supposed to feel safe and clean and in control.

Termites and wood boring beetle, etc.- How to exterminate using different treatment techniques.

The name wood-boring beetle covers the kind of wood destroying beetles on its larval or adults stage. It is commonly referred in the Philippines as "bukbok" in the woodworking business. Longhorn beetles, weevils, bark beetles and metallic flat-headed borers are the most common.

These beetles are regarded as primary decomposers in nature; they are significant in the ecosystem, as they let new growth of trees by get ridding of dead trees in the forest. They give back nutrients to the soil in the process. Imagine a dead tree with all its nutrients locked in, this is where wood borers are important in nature’s way of recovery cycle.                                                                                                                                                                                                      Powder post beetle in focus.

Some beetles such as Asian longhorn and emerald ash borer may attack healthy living tress that can be considered as economic pests in agricultural sense, many of these organisms will only eat dead trees, and this is where domestic problem particularly in building construction arises.

It is not common for furniture or other wood products to be infested by woodborers (as they are basically a dead tree).  The wood supplies that have been used may have a presence of beetle eggs or larvae, with its long life cycle; it may take years before their presence becomes obvious.  These are some concerns to be focused with by homeowners and builders from planning to construction.  The infestation may occur ideally in humid areas of the house.

Infested wooden furniture must be removed or thrown away before the infestation becomes serious. In reality, distinguishing the pest by researching further before calling an exterminator is a tiresome task and may prove impractical or waste of time, leave the job to an entomologist or seek immediate help from a reliable local pest control provider is the best option. Some beetles attack timber used in construction and furniture making; others limit their infestation to forests or roots of living trees.

Most of the method treatment includes:

1.       Spot application of pesticides by spraying or brushing; do not do it by yourself, most effective insecticides are only obtainable by certified pest control professionals.

2.       Cold treatment by Freezing. For valuable or expensive infested furniture, this may be an option.   Wrapping it in a protective cover such as plastic and placed big in freezers for several weeks.

3.       Heat treatment procedure, where wood is heated at high temperature for a few hours.

4.       Fumigation, treatment usually employing gaseous pesticide to suffocate pests.
